Somebody Save Me by Harseik Somebody Save Me by Harseik
EDIT: Touch-ups applied on 9/13/2015

EDIT: I have dedicated this piece to the victims of the earthquake that shook the borders of Tokyo not too long ago. My prayers and hopes go out to them. May God watch over those people affected.

Done at last! And surprisingly, it didn't take very long. Whoa, man. I actually colored a full-blown scene. O_o And I must say I did a very lazy coloring job on this thing, yet I think it still came out okay. Watch, I'm gonna hate it tomorrow. I always do.

Thupermaaaaaaan. He's so nice. D'aaaw. Okay, who wouldn't save a child? But still...

You know, the sun beam falling on their hands was completely unintentional. I just put it wherever, and look where it ended up. xD IT WAS FATE. Is the lighting correct? I dunno. But playing with the colors was fun. Inserting a random green glow was totally worth it.

I'm open for critiques concerning this pic. I'm sure there are plenty of flaws I need my attention drawn to, so have at it if you like. :]

This is resoundingly beautiful, not just because of the technical skill of the image, the natural reality of the lighting, but the composition... it's transporting.  I look at this and I feel a wash of hope, the sudden flood of relief when we're nearly overwhelmed with fear or bleakness then the unexpected saves us.  This is moving for me, deeply, deeply moving.

Thank you truly for making this and even more for sharing it with us.  The next time I'm feeling lost I'll look at this.  ;]

'Well, Mom always told me not to go with strangers wearing their undies on the outside of their indecently skin-tight clothing but I suppose these ARE extenuating circumstances, Mister...'

!! Holy crap! I just realised that the 'Man of Steel' can never, ever, have an uncontrolled and inconvenient boner. Ever. There is no cup that could withhold that shame.

Exactly,
Superman believes that humankind can become great themselves, volunteers who help those less fortunate, law enforcement, firefighters, everyone,
we can become a wise caring race without Superman having to stop bank robbers or kidnappers all the time, we can rely on our own prowess to overcome such things, just like a parent watching their children take on the worlds problems on their own without guidance.
...But a giant meteor, a horrible earthquake, violent volcanic eruption, frenzy of tornados, or flash flood...THAT sounds like a job for Superman!! :iconlaplz:

This... this is what Superman is about. He's not about breaking physics with his incredible strength and speed. He's not about beating up bad guys or angsting about being alone in the world.

He's about the human element. He's about keeping first things first.

Priority 1: Keep the people safe and happy.

This is Superman.

This - and alll of your work - is both beautiful and inspiring <3  If it's alright with you, I would love to learn from your work, get re-inspired to start my art again and take my tablet/sketcher and weapons (... the tools of the trade lawl) back in hand, and start to draw and learn from a new perspective - fresh and new eyes~!

I don't expect you to teach me, since I know you're far too busy to do that (if you could, man, that would make my life!) but like, to let me look at the anatomy, the way you flow the capes and uniforms, the way you shade, etc. - that in itself would help me immensely and help to get me on the right track, along with learning my art program, (maybe buying a new tablet?) and practice forever... I dunno, I'm starting to ramble... I tend to do that when I meet amazing artists like yourself ;w;

If you.. maybe.. reply.. heee.... it might get lost in my 7k+ messages.... but I would love a note from you to tell me whether I can be like... an understudy of your artwork and such, and maybe learn stuff from you..?  I swear I wouldn't ever steal anything ;-; I'm not like that! -hides-

Stick around for a while and you might notice that I respond to comment reeeeaaally late on occasion. xD I'm flaky, I'm sorry. Thank you very much for the kind words, Julzeh. They mean the world to me. I'll try to see if I can come up with some tips, because I know we all have the potential to get better. :] I don't believe art is really about talent. Well, maybe 2% of it is, but the rest comes with work, love, and dedication to the craft.

I think I have some pointers that might help you improve, though in no way am I an expert, or even a professional for that matter, but there are a few things that have been useful for me. I suggest perusing the stock image section here on deviantART and practice drawing figures that have foreshortening - people captured in dramatic angles. This for example: Expressions from Above Stock Pack Do you know what gesture drawing is? It's where you draw quickly and unfussily, focusing instead on the movement and overall shape of the figure. Performing exercises like these at least once a day: fc02.deviantart.net/fs51/f/200… will dramatically improve your anatomy and line work. Start with just doing a couple a day. No need to make yourself gesture draw for hours, especially if you have commitment issues like me (LOL).

Also, check out the Resources section in my favorites: harseik.deviantart.com/favouri… I've collected a ton of useful guides and reference images that you might also find beneficial.

Here's an amazing website that generates images for figure drawing practice. What a time saver!: artists.pixelovely.com/

I wish I was more of a teacher sort, because I know you deserve my attention, but I think the best I can do is give you resources. I find it hard to communicate lessons over the Internet. However, if there are particular drawings I've done that you'd like a breakdown on, I could arrange something like that. :) I'm also happy to redline any of your personal work. I'd like to help, but I'm a little awkward to study off of, I imagine.

Again, thank you for your comment.

Yup, for me Superman, and Spiderman have always been my heroes, whether saving a plane from falling to the ground, or helping firefighters extinguish a burning building, with freeze breath, they represent the best of people, prompting us to follow their lead. Likewise, I couldn't agree with you more.

dA needs a like button. I couldn't be more in agreement with you. I think there's a little piece of the character in the majority of us, in our childhood, in our morals, whether we're aware of it or not. There isn't a more relatable superhero out there, IMO. :]

Superman is hard to understand and too incredibly complex for a lot of comic book goers. 85 years does that to a character. I need to come to terms with that. Let's just be happy that we can come together and enthuse about the Man of Steel over the web. <3

I think that some of the problem lies within the fact that while Superman stories have the potential to be immensely powerful and creative, he can also be incredibly hard to write properly.

A lot of Superman's early conception had to do with just throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks. He's had some very muddled storylines in the past, with wildly varying power levels (There have been incarnations of Supes that could sneeze galaxies out of existence and project little mini-Supermans from his finger. No, seriously) and some seriously questionable character moments and decisions that sometimes writers have a hard time figuring out how to bring something new to the table while still staying true to the core of the character.

Personally, I find my favorite Superman stories that either deal with issues surrounding his power and how it affects him/others, show him facing a threat of such a level that even he feels powerless and vunerable (a la Darkseid or Doomsday) or else show him out maneuvered and outplayed to the point that it's difficult for him to fight back without coming off as the bad guy.

Show me a Superman struggling to become a hero in a world that isn't ready for him, and having to fight to gain the trust of the people. Show me his blunders in a way that portrays that he's only trying to help, but due to a poor grasp of the situation or rash decisions or plain old inexperience inadvertently makes the situation worse for others. Let me enjoy watching him grow and learn to pick himself back up after he falls as-one deed at a time-he wins the favor of people over until he becomes a hero, someone that, while by no means perfect, is an example for others to aspire to, a living legend, a hero.

Or else show me a Superman with a raging inner conflict over the best means of keeping the world safe, a Superman that has to make hard decisions regarding the value of a single life over the safety of millions, or that of the freedom of individuals and not imposing his own will on them vs the danger and madness that unchecked people can bring. Do you become the tyrant you fought to oppose and impose order or let humanity barrel down the path to its own destruction?

Give me a Superman fighting a threat that even he doesn't think he can beat. Let me see that oft unfelt feeling of helplessness and impotence while his loved ones are in peril.

Hell, give me a Superman that wearies of his powers, tired of the fact that he can never be everywhere, never save everybody, is never quite fast enough. A Superman tired of watching his friends and allies fall victim to the perilous situations they put themselves in, or else whom he simply outlives by dint of his nigh immortality-a Superman experiencing an existential crisis, unsure that he wants to be anyone's hero anymore, but is nonetheless called back into the lifestyle when someone he cannot afford to see harmed is threatened, or else when he can no longer ignore a world that needs him to be their champion.

He's such a multilayered character, but it seems like few writers know how to use him to his full potential.
